Deira
About Deira
The oldest commercial district of Dubai, Deira remains one of the most popular places in the emirate to live and work in. A major trading hub, this district is well known amongst tourists for the glittering Gold Souk, with eye-popping displays of precious jewels and metals. A firm favourite with the city’s renters, it came in as the 4th most popular place in Dubai to rent apartments as per our 2019 Dubai Real Estate Market Report. This area guide contains all the information you would need to understand before moving to Deira.
In 1970 Port Rashid at the mouth of Dubai Creek opened to shipping and rapidly became a major world port, but by 2008 all commercial shipping was using Port Jebel Ali at the other end of Dubai. Port Rashid closed and is now earmarked for residential development.
Nevertheless, maritime trade established Deira as the ‘capital’ of Dubai and it is here and on the opposite banks of the Creek that government buildings, law courts and foreign embassies are to be found.
